Dyllon & Natalie’s Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement

There’s something about proposal days that just hits differently — the nerves, the planning, the excitement, and that moment everything finally comes together. Dyllon and Natalie’s proposal at Jewell Hollow Overlook on Skyline Drive will forever be one of my favorite memories behind the camera.

The Planning

Dyllon reached out a few weeks before to start planning this surprise, and from the very beginning, I knew it was going to be special. We had been texting, FaceTiming, and mapping out every detail for nearly three weeks. Funny enough, this proposal almost happened two weeks earlier during their scheduled photoshoot — but the ring didn’t arrive in time.

When he finally got it, we put our plan into motion. We picked the perfect overlook — Jewell Hollow, my first time visiting this spot on Skyline Drive, but now a new favorite! The view is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the mountains fade into layers of soft blue and gold.

The Day Of

I arrived early (like really early), champagne and flowers in hand, heart racing with excitement. I was fully dressed in camo, crouched behind a bush, trying my best not to move or make a sound. 😂 Dyllon and I had one last quick text exchange — a simple “we’re on our way.”

When they arrived, he led her to the overlook just like we’d planned. The light was golden and glowing, wrapping around them in the most perfect way. As he dropped to one knee, I could see her entire face light up in total shock and joy.

And then came one of my favorite moments ever — as she tried to process what was happening, she said, “But Katie isn’t here!” Dyllon just smiled and pointed toward the bush where I was hiding. When she realized I had been there the whole time, she burst into tears — the happiest, sweetest kind.

It was such a real, emotional reaction that I’ll never forget it. The laughter, the tears, the complete surprise — it was everything a proposal should be.

The Celebration

After the big “yes,” I finally came out of hiding (which had all of us laughing), and we captured more photos to celebrate. The mountain views stretched endlessly behind them as the sun dipped low, and the whole scene felt straight out of a movie — a perfect ending to one of the most joyful moments I’ve ever captured.

Why I Love What I Do

Capturing moments like this — the real, raw, joy-filled ones — is exactly why I love photography. Every proposal has its own story, but this one will always stick with me.

Dyllon and Natalie’s proposal was full of emotion, laughter, and love in its purest form. It’s proof that the best moments are the ones you can feel — the ones that remind you how beautiful it is to say yes to forever.
